Vineyards
The Kunej family currently cultivates 5 hectares (approx. 12.5 acres) of vineyards, which are planted in prestigious wine-growing areas in Sremič (district of Bizeljsko – Sremič, wine-growing region of Posavje). The vineyards are planted on three prestigious sites, where the grapes thrive in terms of both ripeness and overall health. Because of its particular position, Sremič has a special microclimate. The warm air flows from the valley around Krško over the hills of Sremič and enables better ripening. At the same time, the constant breeze dries the leaves of the grapevine, reducing the risk of fungal diseases. The three main vine-growing locations are:
The Kunej Stone Cottage Vineyard
This is the old Kunej vineyard covering 1.2 hectares (3 acres) of arable land. The vineyard was completely revitalized this year with Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon varieties.
Roševo
The Roševo vineyard is situated in a prime location just above the town of Krško (formerly known as Videm). It was planted afresh in 2020 and comprises 1.4 hectares (3.5 acres). The location has a southern exposure and a slope of 32°, making it very suitable for red wines as it allows them to reach excellent phenolic maturity. Here, we cultivate Blaufränkisch and Merlot.
The Old Yew Vineyard (Pohorje)
This is our largest complex of vineyards, situated on a spherical hill. In its centre grows an old yew tree, which was most likely planted 100 years ago by Trappist monks from Rajhenburg Castle. It was the monks who first cultivated the vineyard in this area and planted many well-known French varieties. Today, the vineyard complex features varieties such as Chardonnay, Blaufränkisch, Yellow Muscat and Pinot Blanc. The vineyard is adjacent to the renowned “Tri lučke” restaurant in Sremič.
